On Tour!

Dave's picture

Halfway thru the NZ National Tour now. Started in Christchurch on Sumner Beach, staying in the very nice Grand Chancellor Hotel. Was good to join back up with the sandy crew and also did a bit of refereeing along with coaching Team Biopaints. Drove back to Nelson taking the boys from Chile and sandy Tony stopping at the very nice Maruia Falls . In Nelson we hosted a Grand Slam tournament—had 2 perfect days of hot sunny weather on Tahuna Beach—Copy of team bp 09the best beach volleyball beach in NZ!

Volleyball England Beach Tour Finals

August 30-31 was the Finals weekend for the English Tour. The format was top 8 teams from the tour get automatic entry and then 8 more spaces are open to anyone to qualify for. You also had to have played at least 2 events on the tour. After our 5th placing the weekend before we felt good but Adrian's leg wasn't getting better fast. We missed the entry deadline and then the late entry deadline thinking his leg was to bad to play. Friday night as I was helping to build the courts (3 courts on the road to be used for the junior world champs the following week) a team pulled out leaving only 15 men's teams entered. Adrian and I decided to enter to fill the spot. Saturday was a brilliant sunny day with no clouds--best day of the beach tour all summer! We were seeded 8th due to our 2 good previous results and so had the 1st seeds and the 9th seeds in our pool. Both these teams were very good (and both ended up in the semis) so we knew we up against it.

5th at Great Yarmouth Grand Slam-VEBT.

This was the 3rd of the Grand Slams of the tour but the 1st I played in. Drove the Dodge up Friday nite with Carlton and Laurie and were forced to eat at Little Chef as could find nothing else. However I ate a large portion of lemon sorbet cheesecake which I joked would help me play the next day!

On the podium finally at Bridlington Open! (VEBT)

Friday afternoon it was hot and sunny as I met Carlton (mate from Nelson, NZ) and Adrian (my new beach partner) and loaded into the van. We fought our way out of London and then up the M1. 6 hours later we pulled into Bridlington on the east Yorkshire coast. I hadnt managed to find room in a campsite so we drove around for an hour asking and looking before setting up on some grass right by the promenade and the beach! Probably not allowed but it was late!

Sandbanks Classic--VEBT Grand Slam

Friday nite 4th of July Lenore picked me up and we drove down to Poole. Took the A3 instead of the M3 which made for a slightly longer journey and arrived at the campground at about 11:30pm where Mark was sleeping in the van already! Put tents up in the rain and went to bed. Up early and to the beach-Sandbanks is a nice little peninsula of sand just south of Poole. It has some large houses along the strip which apparently now sell for a small fortune. However I wasn't that impressed with them--nothing like the houses we would build along coastal frontage like that in NZ. (compare it to Mt Maunganui beach front!)
