Anna and SarahAnna and SarahAnna Chamberlain and Sarah Baldwin have continued their rich vein of recent form by winning the Biopaints Tahunanui Grand Slam beach volleyball tournament.

The Nelson pair, who won the Brightwater Beach Volleyball Classic just before Christmas, took out a closely fought final over Kim Wong and Peri Stenhouse 2-1 (21-18 19-21 15-11) yesterday. They had earlier won their semifinal over Michelle Kenny and Marie-Claire Brehaut 2-0 (21-17, 24-22).

"It could have gone either way," Tasman Volleyball's Allan Brodie said of the final. "But Chamberlain and Baldwin were consistent enough to come through and win a very close game."

The win gives Team Biopaints valuable seeding points as they head into the National Tour starting in Christchurch today.

December Results

Anna and Sarah played 3 events in December across the country getting results of 7th, 1st and 3rd.

December 19-20 was the Mairangi Grand Slam on the North Shore. There were 13 teams in the womens draw and Team Biopaints was seeded 4th. They won their first match 2-0 (15-10, 15-13) lost their 2nd match 1-2 (15-11, 14-16, 12-15) won their 3rd match 2-0 (15-10,15-3) and lost their 4th match 0-2 (13-15, 11-15). This gave them a 7th place and dropped them out on the first day meaning a quick flight home to Nelson to play in the Brightwater Classic the very next day! Seeded No.1 they proved it by winning the 1 day tournament comfortably, beating Peri Stenhouse and Melissa Duff in the final 2-0 (21-15,21-8).

December 29-30 was the Mauao Grand Slam on Mt Maunganui Beach. Anna and Sarah finished 3rd= after losing their semifinal to eventual winners Micah Lindsay-Brown and Hannah Croad 2-0 (21-17, 21-15).

New season, new partner

Anna is playing her 5th season on the beach with new partner Sarah Baldwin of Nelson. Long time training partners Anna and Sarah know each other very well and although both prefer to play the defensive role should be a strong team this season. After injury to her partner cut short Annas season last year she is hoping that this will be the year she makes it to the NZ Open at Stanley St (top 8 NZ teams). Anna and Sarahs local Nelson supporters can see them at the Tahunanui Grand Slam on January 2-3.

Injury hits Team Biopaints

Anna and Baileys season suffered a setback after Baileys bruised and swollen ankle forced them to withdraw from the Ohope tournament near the end of day 1. Bailey had rolled her ankle in Wellington but played on and felt ok to start in Ohope. They lost their first game narrowly but then won a game before her ankle flaired up again causing them to withdraw however they still finished in 9th place. The physio advised her not to play and so the girls had to withdraw from the Mt Maunganui leg of the tour. The tour has one last stop in Auckland for the big season finale--the NZ Open so Anna is hoping to find a new partner in time for that event. She has never previously qualified for the finals of the NZ Open so with the right partner 2009 could change all that!
